I need to replace the fibre washers on these bearings of a Ransome Ajax. Can I use heat to prise the covers off as they are set fast ?

Just made one with a free sample of felt and bought some felt off ebay..
I guess it only needs to retain oil
I wouldn’t heat them or you…
I wouldn’t heat them or you may stretch them and / or have an oil/ grease Bon fire in them. The packing inside is felt. I’ve not got an Ajax manual but it is the same arrangement as on a Marquis with a plain steel washer next to the bearing to separate the bearing from the felt. Those washers are still available from Ransomes but I seem to remember that for an Ajax it just needs one sliced in half to do both.
My method of removing the covers is to use a light duty cold chisel sharpened to a very acute edge and apply it to the junction between the cover and the bearing holder. Do this a number of timed all around the circumference of the junction and it will open up the space between the cover and holder. It will either dislodge the cover or create enough space to insert a couple of small pry bars.
