If I recall correct, going back 32+ yrs...the spring sits in the bearing holder hole in the non drive side sideplate.   The roller shaft is then inserted.  It acts upon the roller shaft end to keep the roller assembly pushed towards the drive side in correct orientation.

Sorry, you’re going to have to take that side plate off and fit it , or it’l bug you for ever and a day!  It was fitted for a reason . Shouldn’t  take too long as the machine has already been apart.
