Advice on engine for Atco B24

Just had a bad day along with the weather  I have totally refurbished  an Atco B24 from top to bottom for a friend.

I was finishing it off today and was trying to set  revs on engine, a Tecumseh H50.  I started the engine on high revs and it made a noise and then there was no compression. Must be valves or rings gone.  I am absolutely gutted. As I have spent the Winter working at it and totally refurbished it, a lot of new parts.  Engine also overhauled, valves, gasket, carb etc.  I have a choice of using a Briggs from another machine or a good 4hp Honda engine, or open up Tecumseh and see what is broken.

I am leaning towards the Honda option although it is not an original part.  I would also like to do up the the atcoB24 with the Briggs engine.  Any views/advice would be appreciated.

N.B. Do not high rev Tecumseh engines.  Still gutted.! Atco B24

You mention that you’ve done a valve job but now have no compression.  Possibly a valve spring retainer wasn’t seated properly and has come adrift. Before you hit the panic button . Take  the valve chest cover off and have a look. If it’s just a misplaced spring retainer and you have a decent spring compressor you can possibly refit without even having to lift the cylinder head.

Definitely an Oops moment ( or words to that effect ). I certainly think you should investigate the reason for the failure before committing to an engine swap, as Wristpin says the problem could be an easy fix.
