How to setup a carb?

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hi. I'm new to this club, and to ownership of a couple of Suffolk Punch 35 mowers, so please excuse any gaffs in this first forum topic.

On my initial Punch there is a Dellorto carburettor. The operating manual gives clear instruction on how to set this up.

On my 2nd Punch there is a Tillotson carb. Sadly I don't have (despite searching) an operating manual for this specific version. I've read all the posts on this Old Lawnmower Club site relating to Tillotson carbs....but informative as they are....none describes how to setup this carb.

Does such information exist in print? Or in the experience/memory of other club members?

My 2nd Punch is currently sat idle. I attempted a strip down of the carb yesterday...and after plenty of carb cleaner, fine wire and elbow grease, I was pleased it started and cut a small patch of grass smoothly. Today I attempted to cut the main grass area....all was fine for 10mins....then it cut out. Nothing I tried would get it to fire again. I guess another strip down looms!

I inspected the plug....which was blackened. Hence my question re setup....for post strip down....and hopefully a longer grass cutting session!

Thanks.

Doug.

Hi, I'm no expert on carbs but a 10 minute cut would indicate to me not a lot wrong with the carb itself. 10 minutes is more than sufficient to get the engine hot and the carb and engine to function as they should. If the mower ran fine without coughing and spluttering during that time I would suggest it could be a dirt problem. What state is the state of the fuel tank ? Have a look at the bottom of the tank with a small torch to see if years of small particles of dirt have accumulated. Sometimes as the fuel level goes down or you go over bumps the dirt can get sucked through. If this is the case a quick flush of the tank may help by taking the fuel pipe off and opening the tap to let the grunge out. Worth a try and but unfortunately you'll have to clean the carb again now.

Thanks. Yes...another strip down and tank flush!

Still hoping someone has experience/instructions for setting up Tillotson carb though. The plug was so blackened after a short period of running...vast majority "off choke".

Hi, there is a YouTube video on how to set up the carb. Also an Australian website on how to also. Just Google how you set up ................

The Tillotson carb on my Punch is a FC-11E1A. I can't find a video or website showing setup of this type. Only the more modern types.

Could you share the URLs if you've seen any for the FC11-E1A?

Cheers
